Description
Deep brain stimulation is used to treat movement and affective disorders such as Parkinson's, essential tremor, dystonia, major depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is a surgical procedure involving the implantation of a neurostimulator which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. An implanted pulse generator (IPG) is placed subcutaneously below the clavicle with an insulated wire running below the skin to an extension located behind the ear. The extension connects the IPG to a lead containing an electrode which interferes with neuronal activity. Different kinds of symptoms or diseases will determine which specific areas of the brain the lead is placed.
