Artist's Description

The "DeWitt Clinton," the third locomotive built in America, was constructed for the Mowhawk and Hudson Railroad by the West Point Foundry in 1831. The first experimental trip of this 2.5 ton engine was made on July 5th. On August 19th, 1831, a train of passenger cars was hauled from Albany to Schenectady, a distance of about 14 miles, in 46 minutes; horse-drawn cars traveled the same distance in about an hour and 15 minutes. The cars were in the style of old-fashioned stage coaches, with a driver's seat or box, on the outside at either end.
