Description
This group of diatoms was found on the surface of a mayfly larva. Diatoms are unicellular algae with a box-like cover (lid and bottom) of silicon dioxide. The shell has fine pores through which the diatom accesses the external environment for processes such as waste removal and mucilage secretion. Scanning electron micrograph. Magnification is 120x at 12x12cm image size.
