Description
There is approximately 2 m of DNA packed inside every human cell. To fit such a long stretch of DNA (left), the DNA has to be very tightly packed. There are at least 2 levels of folding 1.) The DNA is coiled around a family of proteins called histones. Eight of these histone proteins associate with a stretch of DNA into a structure called a nucleosome (center). The histones act like a scaffold for the DNA. 2.) A string of nucleosomes is condensed into a chromatin fiber which forms a chromosome (shown on the right).
