Description
Domoic acid molecular model. The substance has the molecular formula C15 H21 N O6, and has a molar mass of 311.3303 g/mol. Domoic acid is a kainic acid analog, a heterocyclic amino acid associated with certain harmful algal blooms (genus Pseudo-nitzschia and the species Nitzschia navis-varingica). It can bioaccumulate in marine organisms such as shellfish, anchovies, and sardines that feed on the phytoplankton known to produce this toxin. It is a neurotoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning. In mammals, including humans, domoic acid acts as a neurotoxin, causing short-term memory loss, brain damage and, in severe cases, death. Key Carbon- brown, Hydrogen- white, Nitrogen- green, Oxygen- blue.
