Description
Tapisserie de l'Apocalypse. A medieval tapestry of the False Prophet, the Dragon, and the Beast of the Sea. "And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the Dragon, and out of the mouth of the Beast, and out of the mouth of the False Prophet. For they are the spirits of the devils', working miracles, which go forth unto the Kings of the Earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the Battle of that Great Day of God Almighty." The first beast comes from "out of the sea" and is given authority and power by the dragon. The second beast comes from "out of the earth" and directs all peoples of the earth to worship the first beast. The second beast is also referred to as the false prophet. The two beasts are aligned with the dragon in opposition to God. They persecute Christians and influence the kings of the earth to gather for the battle of Armageddon. The image of the frog coming out of the mouth of the dragon occurs in many alchemical treatises as a symbol of preliminary forms. The two beasts are defeated by Christ and are thrown into the lake of fire. The Apocalypse Tapestry is a medieval French tapestry commissioned by Louis I, the Duke of Anjou, and produced between 1377 and 1382. It depicts the story of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation by Saint John the Divine. They were conceived and executed by Nicolas Bataille and Robert Poincon.
