Description
Duodenal villi. Color ehnahced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of villi in the duodenum, the upper part of the small intestine. Villi are folds in the duodenal wall, which project into the lumen. These folds greatly increase the absorptive and secretory surface of the duodenum. Digestive and stomach-acid neutralising enzymes are secreted by the duodenum, and food is further digested here. Nutrients from the food are then absorbed into the blood through capillaries which are contained in each villus. To aid food absorption, villi are more widely distributed in the duodenum than elsewhere in the intestine. Magnification x152 at 6x7cm size. Magnification x250at 4x5inch size.
