False-color satellite image showing variations in height of the sea surface around the Indian Ocean during the Monsoon season. The red areas indicate regions where the height of the sea surface is greater than mean sea level. This effect is a consequence of the low air pressure over these areas which is associated with the annual Monsoon wind system. The image was acquired between February and April 1987 by a radar altimeter onboard the Geosat satellite. The height of the sea surface is also affected by the sea floor topography and the density of the water. Data supplied by Dr S. Nerem, GSFC.
