Artist's Description
A painting by Cornelia Adele Tassett of the Electoral Commission of 1877, which was established to resolve the dispute over the US presidental election of 1876. Although Samuel Tilden defeated Rutherford Hayes in the popular vote, the electoral votes in three states were in dispute. Hayes was eventually awarded the votes and the presidency.
