Description
Berkeley Lab scientists have used in situ transmission electron microscopy to measure hollow spherical nanoparticles that withstand extreme stress and deform without losing strength. At upper right, a cadmium sulfide nanosphere before stress is applied. The hollow sphere is partly transparent to the electron beam. At lower right, the sphere after being stressed to the point of failure. Nanotechnology (nanotech) is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
