Description
Road to the Aegean Sea from Ephesus, an ancient Greek city on the west coast of Anatolia, in present-day Izmir Province, Turkey. It was one of 12 Greek Ionian League cities, and by the 1st Century BC, the second largest city of the Roman Empire. Famed for the Temple of Artemis (550 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, destroyed in 401 CE. Emperor Constantine I rebuilt the city and public baths, which were then partly destroyed by earthquake in 614. Commercial importance declined as the Cayster River silted in its harbor. Today's archaeological site lies 3 km southwest of Selcuk. The ruins are a favorite tourist attraction, with easy access from Kusadasi.
