Description
View from space of evaporation ponds in Chile's Salar de Atacama, an enclosed salt flat with no drainage outlets located in the southern half of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Below the surface are brines (water with a high percentage of dissolved salts) rich in lithium salts. These are pumped to the surface into the evaporation facilities in the image center. Lithium is an essential component of advanced batteries and medicines.
