Iceland, the largest volcanic island on Earth, borders the Arctic Circle and is sliced down the middle by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a highly geologically active fissure. Earth's surface is composed of about a dozen tectonic plates that fit snugly like puzzle pieces and float atop earth's partially molten mantle. Iceland's unique placement in the Northern Atlantic Ocean marks the boundaries of the American Tectonic Plate and the Eurasian Tectonic Plate. As these plates spread lava reaches earth's surface and Iceland's volcanoes are born.
