Description
External and internal female reproductive organs. Remaining dormant until puberty, the female reproductive system is intended to produce offspring. In order to do this, the body must produce gametes and prepare to nurture a developing embryo. The primary female reproductive organs, the ovaries, serve two purposes. They create and nurture gametes and they produce the female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Accessory structures, the uterine tubes, uterus and vagina, serve the needs of the reproductive cells and the developing fetus and also comprise the internal genitalia. The external genitalia include the labia majora, labia minora and the mons pubis.
