Artist's Description
Flint hatchet from Saint-Acheul. Saint-Acheul is a suburb of Amiens after which the Acheulean archeological culture is named. Acheulean is an archeological industry of stone tool manufacture characterized by distinctive oval and pear-shaped hand-axes associated with Homo erectus and derived species such as Homo heidelbergensis. Acheulean tools were produced during the Lower Palaeolithic era across Africa and much of West Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Europe. It is thought that Acheulean technologies first developed about 1.76 million years ago. Image taken from Primitive Man by Louis Figuier, 1870 (cropped and cleaned).
