Description
"Forams" are single-celled marine animals dating back to the Cambrian period. Distant cousins of amoebae, their calcium carbonate shells grow in spirals, one chamber at a time as the organism grows larger. This micrograph shows both sides of Globorotalia menardii, a tropical species that lives in cool waters upwelling near the eastern boundaries of ocean basins. SEM x 160.
