An oil painting of "A Formal Garden" (1766) by Johannes Janson (Dutch, 1729 - 1784). The artist's use of dramatic receding perspective gives a sense of spatial depth. Wealthy Dutch citizens often commissioned paintings of their gardens. This one may have been located in the province of Noordholland, north of Amsterdam. The promenade at left leads to farmland, while the path at right leads to a shipping scene, two sources of Holland's wealth.
