Artist's Description

The Foundling Hospital, Holborn, London a bird's-eye view of the courtyard and a busy scene in the street. Colored engraving by Nathaniel Parr after Louis-Pierre Boitard, 1753. This was a charitable organization that looked after abandoned babies. Those admitted were raised to the age of fourteen for boys and sixteen for girls, after which they were sent for apprenticeships. The hospital was founded in 1739 by Thomas Coram, a sea captain, and this building was opened in 1745.
