The Massacre of Wassy is the name given to the murder of Huguenot worshippers and citizens in an armed action by troops of Francis, Duke of Guise, on March 1, 1562. The massacre is identified as the first major event in the French Wars of Religion. The French Wars of Religion were a prolonged period of war and popular unrest between Catholics and Huguenots (1562-98). It is estimated that three million people perished in this period from violence, famine, or disease in what is considered the second deadliest religious war in European history. Engraving by Jacques Tortorel, 16th century (cropped and cleaned). NOTE no chart available to identify lettered characters.
