Description
Swarm of the Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster) clustered on glass. Known more correctly as a Pomace Fly, Drosophila melanogaster has for many years been the subject of genetic experiments, particularly on mutation. These experiments have led to many important genetic discoveries. This small fly with red compound eyes was chosen for study because it reproduces rapidly and in large numbers. It has only four pairs of chromosomes which are large and easy to identify. Some of the easily observed genetic traits that vary in these studies include changes of eye or body color, wing shape, or the presence of bristles on the body.
