Description
The undersides of the toes of a common gecko (Tarentola mauritanica) are composed of many lamellate cushions (pads). These tiny plates of skin are equipped with millions of microscopic hairs that produce electrical attractions. It is the combined attraction of the weak electrical forces (van der Waals forces) that allow the gecko to cling to virtually any surface including polished glass. Photographed in Southern France. (see image bd3738 for a man made structure comparison to a shoe sole).
