Nobel-prize winner George F. Smoot views the Planck satellite under construction at the Alcatel Alenia Space facility in Cannes, France in 2007. Smoot was awarded the prize for discoveries related to Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, the radiation left over from the Big Bang. Planck, launched in 2009, is surveying this radiation, and in March of 2013 an all-sky map of the CMB was released.
