Description
Glia and neurons function together in the spinal cord and brain. A neuron transmits a signal via a long axon and across a synaptic gap to a dendrite of another neuron. Astrocyte glia surround and regulate synapses and supply neurons with nutrients. The myelin sheath that insulates axons is produced by oligodendrocyte glia. When a neuron's action potential reaches the axon terminal, it causes vesicles to move to the membrane and open. This releases signaling molecules called neurotransmitters which diffuse across a synaptic cleft to receptors on the dendrite.
