Artist's Description

Ignition of the glycine nitrate process, a fast, energy efficient way to produce homogeneous and phase pure powders through the combustion of solutions containing metal nitrate precursors and organic complexants like glycine. The combustion process is initiated by heating to 200 where auto ignition produces a fine oxide powder within in a few minutes. This powder is used in gas separation membranes, catalytic reactors, and solid oxide fuel cells. Photographed at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory as part of the DOE's basic energy science program.
