Description
Yankee Fork bucket dredge near Challis, Idaho. It was used for mining gold on the Yankee Fork River. It started operations in 1940, on and off, until 1952 when it was abandoned. It moved millions of tons of rock and traveled 7 miles upstream. It is essentially a floating factory with an excavator on the front. The dredge has 72 buckets, each weighing 1100 lbs with ?-cubic yard capacity. Dredging is usually carried out at least partly underwater, gathering up stream rock (and gold) which are conveyed to separation equipment.
