Description
Macrophotograph of the modified forelimb of the male great diving beetle (Dytiscus marginalis). At the tip of the leg are two claws; a flat sucker-like structure (at right) with modified hairs is used by the male of this species to clasp the female during mating. Dytiscus marginalis is an aquatic predator which uses clawed limbs to capture its prey. Magnification x4.4 at 35mm size.
