Description
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) in flight. The Great Horned Owl's wingspan ranges from 30 to 55 inches, with a total body weight of 3 to 5 pounds. As in most raptor species, the females are larger than the males. These owl's reach flight speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. The key features for identifying a Great Horned Owl include the feather tufts (hornes) on the head, large (cat-like) yellow eyes, a dark beak and the white "bib" of feathers on the throat.
