Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (January 22, 1869 - December 30, 1916) was a Russian mystic, faith healer and private adviser to the Romanovs. An illiterate peasant, he earned the name rasputin (debauched one) for his early licentious behavior. After undergoing a religious experience, he gained a reputation among the peasants as a holy man, able to heal the sick. He became known to Nicholas and the susceptible Alexandra, and he proved capable of stopping the bleeding of their hemophiliac son, probably by means of hypnotism. He became a favorite at court, despite reports of his continuing and flagrant debauchery. When Nicholas left Alexandra in charge of Russia's internal affairs in 1915, Rasputin influenced her appointment of church officials and incompetent cabinet ministers.
