Description
Commissioner George Larrick chose the Hagi Pipe as an example of why FDA needed funds to continue its accelerated oversight of health fraud during a 1960 congressional appropriation hearing. The Hagi Pipe made in Japan at a cost of 6 cents, was offered for sale at $2.40. Made of bamboo with a mouthpiece on one end, it carried the claim, "Gospel to all smokers, hagi pipe to prevent lung cancer from smoking."
