Description
A Hairy Pufferfish (Tetraodon baileyi – in the genus Pao according to some systematics). The species is known from the Mekong River in Thailand and Laos. Oddly enough, they are collected in areas with rapids and strong flow… even though they aren’t particularly strong swimmers. They like to bury in sand or silt substrate - sometimes with just their eyes exposed. They get their common name from their finger-like epidermal growths, or cirri. This captive specimen is ~13cm (~5') total length. Photographed in 2018.
