Harold swearing to maintain the right of the Duke of Normandy to the throne of England. Harold I (1016 - March 17, 1040) was a King of England (1035-40). The son of Cnut the Great, Harold was elected regent of England following the death of his father, ruling England in place of his brother Harthacnut, who was stuck in Denmark due to a rebellion. In 1037, Harold was officially proclaimed king. Harold died just as Harthacnut was preparing an invasion force of Danes, and was buried at Westminster Abbey. His body was subsequently exhumed, beheaded, and thrown into a fen bordering the Thames when Harthacnut assumed the throne. The cause of Harold's death is uncertain. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
