Artist's Description
A photograph showing the extremes of high and low water (92 feet) at the head of the Dalles, Columbia River, Oregon. Taken by Carleton Watkins (1829 -1916) around 1883. Albumen silver print. Watkins skillfully composed this picture with attention to the tide-mark that begins near the middle of the rocks and continues along the water's surface to the right edge of the photograph. Watkins probably made this photograph for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company to document the Columbia River's fluctuating water levels. The man in the foreground, who appears very small in relation to the rock, can be used as a height comparison.
