Description
Polarized light micrograph of histamine crystals. Histamine is derived from the amino acid histidine and is mainly associated with the mast cells found in connective tissue. It is one of the chemicals involved in inflammation, dilation and increased permeability of small blood vessels. It is released in large quantities in response to venomous animal bites. Reactions to this can range from a mild characteristic welt to severe rashes or hives. Histamine release also brings on a number of other allergic reactions, including asthma.
