Retro-viruses HIV viruses. TEM of a section through a number of Human Immunodeficiency Viruses (HIV), the cause of AIDS. The spiked outer protein coat (white) surrounds a core of RNA genetic material (red). The HIV virus is transmitted in body fluids, notably blood, semen, and vaginal fluid. The virus attacks T-lymphocyte white blood cells of the immune system, weakening the body`s ability to fight infection. A person who develops AIDS (Aquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) may suffer weight loss and fever, before dying from normally non-life threatening diseases. x80,000 at 6x7cm size.
