Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph showing hollow spheres of recombinant spider silk (produced by genetically modified bacteria) with a diameter between 1 and 30 micrometers. These capsules combine two functions simultaneously they protect enzymes from decomposing proteases, but they make it possible to control and observe the activity of the enclosed enzymes from the outside. In nature, spider silk is used exclusively in the form of threads. By means of biotechnology, procedures have been developed with which it is also possible to produce microparticles, films, gels, fibers and other products from pure spider silk. Magnification 45001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
