Description
Hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) pollinating Echinops sphaerocephalus. Macroglossum stellatarum migrates over great distances and is found in large parts of the Northern hemisphere. Each year in spring, the migration starts in the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Wandering northwards, the hummingbird hawk-moths surmount the still snow-covered Alps and finally reach the south coast of England. Unlike most other hawk-moths, Macroglossum stellatarum flies in the day. It can be seen in bright sunshine hovering in front of flowers probing each bloom with its long proboscis before rapidly darting to the next.
