John Hunter (1728-1793) was a Scottish surgeon regarded as one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. He was an early advocate of careful observation and scientific method in medicine. Humphry Davy (1778-1829), British physicist and professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution of London. Among other accomplishments, Davy created the Davy lamp, a safety lamp for miners.Edward Jenner (1749-1823), English physician and pioneer of vaccination. Jenner coined the word vaccination to describe his use of cowpox innoculation to obtain immunity to smallpox. William Herschel (1738-1822). English astronomer who became famous for the discovery of the planet Uranus in addition to several of its major moons such as Titania and Oberon. He also discovered infrared radiation.
