Description
Hurricane Andrew. Visible light image of the storm Hurricane Andrew, seen on 24 August 1992. The hurricane is the white spiral at center. This image was made after Hurricane Andrew had passed over Florida (just above center). Winds in the storm reached sustained speeds of 230 km/h (140 mph), and caused over $20 billion of damage. After passing Florida, the storm continued over the Gulf of Mexico, then travelled north to Louisiana before dispersing. The data for this image were gathered by the GOES-7 weather satellite in geostationary orbit.
