Artist's Description

Young woman sitting on a mat, holding a long scroll and writing materials, she has turned to the left to speak with a young servant kneeling behind her. The modern Japanese writing system uses a combination of logographic kanji (Chinese characters) and syllabic kana. Kana consists of a pair of syllabaries hiragana, used for native Japanese words and grammatical elements, and katakana, used for foreign words and names, and scientific names. Almost all written Japanese sentences contain a mixture of kanji and kana. The Japanese writing system is often considered to be one of the most complicated in use anywhere in the world. Utamaro Kitagawa, 1795 (cropped and cleaned).
