Description
Seated woman, with scroll and brush, writing. The modern Japanese writing system uses a combination of logographic kanji (Chinese characters) and syllabic kana. Kana consists of a pair of syllabaries hiragana, used for native Japanese words and grammatical elements, and katakana, used for foreign words and names, and scientific names. Almost all written Japanese sentences contain a mixture of kanji and kana. The Japanese writing system is often considered to be one of the most complicated in use anywhere in the world. Eizan Kikukawa, circa 1804-10. (cropped and cleaned).
