Brahe and Kepler. Engraving of astronomers Tycho Brahe (right) and Johannes Kepler discussing observations on the movement of the planet Mars. Brahe (1546-1601) made accurate measurements of heavenly bodies using his naked eye as telescopes had not yet been invented. In 1599 he established an observatory at Benatky Castle near Prague, Czechoslovakia, funded by Emperor Rudolf II. From 1600 he employed Kepler (1571-1630) to help make observations of the planet Mars after reading his Mysterium Cosmographium (1596). Kepler made use of his observations when devising his three laws of planetary motion (1609-18), in which he showed that planets move in ellipses rather than circles.
