Knight, Death, and the Devil, 1513, is one of the three "master prints" of the German artist Albrecht D�rer. A knight, accompanied by his faithful dog, flanked by a goat-headed devil and the figure of death riding a pale horse. Death holds an hourglass to remind the knight of the shortness of his life. The rider moves through the scene ignoring or looking away from the creatures lurking around him, most often interpreted as a symbol of courage. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a Monarch or other political leader for service to the Monarch or country, especially in a military capacity. During the High Middle Ages, knighthood was considered a class of lower nobility.
