Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of linden tree (Tilia cordata) pollen. Lindens belong to the family, Tiliaceae, which consists mainly of tropical, woody plants. The linden tree is found only in Europe. They grow to be 25m tall and bloom in June and July. The tree's inflorescence has a striking, enlarged bract, which provides a mechanism for flying when it drops off the tree with the fruit. Pollen grains carry the male genetic material of flowering plants. They also trigger allergies in people. Magnification 1100x.
