Description
The liver is an organ found only in vertebrates. The most important tasks are the production of vital proteins, the utilization of food components (e.g. storage of glycogen and vitamins), the production of bile, the breakdown and excretion of metabolic products, drugs and toxins. The bile produced by the liver is released into the intestine and helps break down fat. The image shows mainly liver cells (hepatocytes). Lots of sinusoids (small blood vessels) run from the outer edge of the lobule to its center and merge into the central vein (lower right), which is encased by connective tissue (blue). Light microscope, bright field, magnification 400x (when long side 15cm).
