Painting of New Orleans in 1850, looking upriver from the Lower Cotton Press, by artist Bernhard J. Dondorf (1809-1902). The Lower Cotton Press or Levee Steam Cotton Press was where cotton bales were compressed for shipping. It was located at the foot of Press Street at the lower end of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.
