Color enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) image of a section through a lymphocyte (white blood cell) during mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. The nuclear membrane has broken down and the chromosomes (red) have condensed. Lymphocytes are involved in the immune system's defense mechanisms, lymph system and antibody production. Mitochondria, which produce energy for the cell, are colorized violet while the edoplasmic reticulum is colorized green. Magnification 5000x when printed at 10 centimeters wide.
