Description
Color-enhanced Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of three alveolar macrophages (yellow) in a pulmonary alveolus. These immune cells (white blood cells) detect foreign bodies such as dust, pollen and bacteria in the respiratory bronchioles and alveoli. The macrophages then phagocytose (consume) these particles and infections. Magnification is 45001, or 3000x when printed at 10 cm wide.
