Artist's Description

Entitled "Miss Margaret D. Foster, Uncle Sam's only woman chemist." Margaret Dorothy Foster (March 4, 1895 - November 5, 1970) was an American chemist. She graduated from Illinois College, George Washington University and from American University, with a Ph.D. Her studies primarily focused on the analysis of natural waters. Beginning in 1918, she worked for the United States Geological Survey. In 1942, she worked on the Manhattan Project in the Chemistry and Physics Section, under Roger Clark Wells. Her work resulted in two new quantitative methods of analysis, one for uranium and one for thorium. She retired in March 1965. Foster died in 1970 at the age of 75. Photographed by National Photo Company October 4, 1919.
