Description
Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the petal from a common marigold plant, Calendula officinalis. Many white hairs, known as trichomes are seen covering the surface of the petal. At upper right, yellow coloured pollen grains are seen. These are the male reproductive gametes of the plant. The petals of marigolds, which contain compounds such as caretinoids, esters and resins, are widely used in herbal remedies. These can be prepared into teas, creams, oils and ointments to treat symptoms such as wounds and headaches. Magnification x90 at 6x7cm size.
