Description
The nearly 14,000-foot high volcano Mauna Kea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii is the largest of all the Hawaiian islands. Mauna Kea began erupting from the sea floor about 800,000 years ago. Today, as measured from the sea floor, it rises more than 5 miles high. The volcano is dormant, having last erupted about 3,500 years ago, and could erupt again in the future. The summit of Mauna Kea is home to 13 observatories, many of which are the largest in the world.
